Military Burials for Buffalo & WNY
We're proud to honor veterans and their families
At John E Roberts Funeral Home, we are proud to provide military burial services to honor veterans and what they have done for our country. Eligible veterans are entitled to Military Funeral Honors, free of charge, as mandated by law. These military honors include a rifle detail, a color guard, the playing of "Taps," and the presentation of a burial flag from uniformed service members, one of whom is a member of the deceased's parent service.
What is Involved in a Military Burial?
Military burial services consist of traditions by the Military Funeral Honors Program which are intended to honor and express deep gratitude for those who have served our country. At least two uniformed military members will be present to perform the ceremony. This includes the playing of Taps and the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag. Playing of Taps is standard at all military funerals and although a live bugler is preferred, a high-quality recording can be used.
The uniformed military members will fold and present the flag. The flag will be draped over the casket with the union blue field over the head and left shoulder of the deceased. After Taps is played, the flag is carefully folded into a tricorn shape. It is folded 13 times representing the 13 original colonies and folded into the tricorn which symbolizes the hat of the patriots during the American Revolution. No red or white stripes will be seen after it has been folded, just the union blue field. It is then presented to the next of kin.
Your loved one is eligible for military burial services if they:
- were on active duty or in the selected reserve
- served on active duty, completed at least one term of enlistment, or completed at least one period of initial obligated service in the reserves
