Obituary of Robert A. Gilmour

GILMOUR - Robert A.

April 12, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Elaine Gilmour; loving father
of Shelley (late Udo) Stephan, Scott (Ellen) Gilmour and Liane Gilmour
(James Grant); cherished grandfather of Liane (Brian) Jensen, Jennifer
(Bryan) Lastwika, Marc Stephan, Alex, Stephen, Hunter Gilmour, and Melisa
(Mike) Beauchesne-Ellis; survived by 10 great-grandchildren and 5 greatgreat-
grandchildren; brother of the late Bernice (late Jim) MacDonell;
also survived by nieces and nephews. After serving in the Royal Canadian
Navy during WWII, Bob graduated from the U. of Manitoba in Electrical
Engineering (1950) and from Harvard’s business program (1971). He worked
for 35 years with Westinghouse and WABCO in both Canada and the USA,
culminating with his role as VP & GM of WABCO worldwide. Bob had a
passion for helping others. Prior to his retirement in 1986, Bob volunteered
as a ski guide for the blind. He also served on the executive of the Rotary
Club of Hamilton, was a founder of the Burlington Breakfast Rotary Club
and then served as a member of the Rotary Club of Stuart – Sunrise in
Palm City, FL. He was honored with multiple service awards from Rotary
International, including his favorite award for 60 years continued service
without absence. In his early 70’s, he took up scuba diving and became a
certified Master Scuba Diver, Dive Master and underwater videographer.
He then served as a diver for the Florida Oceanographic Society as well
as educational tour guide, reef builder and administrative volunteer. At 80, he
served with the Coast Guard auxiliary where they were so inspired by his
enthusiasm and zest that they now have an award named in his honor.
Known to all as “Captain Bob”, he was a boating enthusiast who maintained
the “Maple Leaf”, a 1936 Taylor craft, at the Starport Marina at Lake Simcoe.
Starport honored him with an award for being the “oldest boater, oldest
tenant (40 years) and oldest boat. Bob had an incredible impact and
effect on all, but his greatest legacy will be the love he gave to his wife
and family. The family will be present at the JOHN E. ROBERTS FUNERAL
