Obituary of Ruth I. Swenson
Ruth Isabel (nee Christman) Swenson, 94, a remarkable woman, died at Buffalo Hospice on March 25, 2019. She was born in South Buffalo on May 4, 1924 and lived in Williamsville, recently at The Amberleigh. She was a founding member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Snyder. She was the beloved wife of William W. Swenson and they celebrated 73 years of happiness together; Bill survives her. She was the daughter of Henry and Muriel Christman and sister of Daniel and John H. Christman, all deceased. She was the mother of Claudia E. Swenson (deceased) and Melinda M. Swenson, grandmother of Pamela Becker, and great-grandmother of Nora Ruth Becker. Ruth graduated from Public School 67 in South Buffalo and from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1945. She had a long career teaching young children in Eggertsville and Snyder schools and retired after 32 years. She volunteered at the Beechwood Home, the Christ United Methodist Church, and other community groups. She was a member of the College Club of Buffalo, the PEO Sisterhood, and the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. Ruth accompanied Bill as they relocated for his work, living in Seattle, WA, Houston, TX, and Wildwood, FL. She enjoyed traveling and had special memories of trips to New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain and Germany. At Amberleigh, she played bridge, was a member of the book club, and accompanied hymns for Protestant church services. She loved music of all kinds, reading, painting, poetry, drawing, bird-watching, deer-watching, gardening, and playing with her cat, Isabel. She was cheerful and funny, sensitive and compassionate, she loved a good story and a good joke, and she loved her family and friends. Her ashes will be buried in a private ceremony at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Hamburg, New York later this year.
