Obituary of Leonard Delano Leftwich

Leonard Delano Leftwich, of Buffalo, NY passed away on Wednesday January 8, 2020 at the age of 86. He departed this Earth surrounded by family and loved ones. Leonard was born on March 4, 1933 in Lackawanna, NY to the late Frank and Rosa (Gayle) Leftwich. He attended Emerson High School in Buffalo, NY where he played basketball helping to lead the team to the Yale Cup Championship two years in a row. After his graduation in 1952, Leonard went on to serve in the United States Army from 1953-1955. During his time in the Army, Leonard was deployed to Seoul Korea where he served for a year and a half. Shortly after his discharge from the army, Leonard married his high school sweetheart Shirley Arlene Clark in a ceremony on August 20, 1955 in Buffalo, NY and from that union had two sons: Leonard and Kenneth. The couple worked hard and were able to purchase a home in North Buffalo in 1974 where they lived together happily until Shirley’s passing in 1999. Leonard remained in the home, which served as “home base” for the family, for the rest of his days. Leonard spent most of his career at Western Electric Co. in Buffalo, NY where he held various positions including load regulator, production control analyst and scheduler, and production control planner. After leaving Western Electric, Leonard went on to work at Dunlop Tire & Rubber in Buffalo, NY as supervisor of the truck tire department before retiring from his position as inspector for Sierra Research in Cheektowaga, NY in 1989. Leonard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who dedicated his life to giving his family the best life possible. He was an avid music lover, particularly jazz. He amassed an impressive collection of vinyl records over the years and could often be found relaxing on his sun porch or back deck while songs from his favorite jazz artists filled the air. Leonard also enjoyed gardening and spent countless hours making sure that his backyard was “ready.” As a former player, Leonard still had a love of basketball and watched NBA games regularly. He was also a fan of football and boxing. Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley and is survived by his two sons: Leonard Dennis Leftwich and Kenneth James Leftwich; two grandchildren: Nicole Cherie (Leftwich) Walker and Kenneth James Leftwich II (Dominique); four great-grandchildren: Amaya Ariel Walker, Kenneth James Leftwich III, Netaya Jaylynn Gilbert, and Travon Letroy Cochran, as well as, a host of cousins, extended family, and dear friends. A home going service will be held on Saturday January 18, 2020 at John E. Roberts Funeral Home 280 Grover Cleveland Highway Amherst, NY. Viewing will take place from 11am-12pm with the funeral service immediately following. Leonard will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY.
