Obituary of William F. Heim

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William Frank Heim left the physical world on February 2nd, 2021. He simply could not bear to be apart from the love of his life, Marjorie, who earned her wings six weeks ago.
William was born on August 15th, 1930 to William and Anna Heim in Buffalo, New York. He was the youngest and the only boy, having three older sisters, Catherine, Anna and Marion. They doted on him. Although he grew up during the Depression, he never felt that he went without. He was a happy child.
Shortly after graduating from Pine Hill High School, William enlisted in the Navy with his buddy, Don Hoffmann. He was stationed in Hawaii, serving on the Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Upon returning to civilian life, he served as a Volunteer Fireman with the Pine Hill Hose Company. During these years, he was set up on a blind date with the sister of his buddy Don’s love, June. It was Marjorie. They wed, and spent over 63 adventure-filled years together.
William was a gifted musician. As a child, he played the harmonica with his dad. He taught himself ukulele, guitar, and later bugle and glockenspiel, which he played with the Pine Hill Drum and Bugle Corps, as a lifelong member. He was a master of harmony, and passed that talent to his daughter, Cynthia, for which she is so grateful.
He spent many years with his son Michael in the Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader and member of the prestigious Order of the Arrow along with his father -in-law Clyde Schrader.
Bill, as he was called by his friends and family, showed an early interest in Art, and was rarely seen without a pencil and a sketch in progress. One of his first jobs upon graduation was a silk screen painter at Ad Art Process in Buffalo. He spent his life drawing and painting, working in charcoal, pastels and oils. He was also a talented leather tooler, Projects included purses, belts, wallets and a most impressive horse saddle on commission, which earned him the cov- eted tri-color ribbon at the Erie County Fair. He has designed chair slip covers, window valances, and also created silk and tulle pillbox hats for his daughter’s wedding attendants.
Bill had his first Art Show at the age of 80. It was attended by childhood schoolmates through new friends. He favored painting places that he and Marjorie had visited. He had plenty of subject matter, as they had toured through China, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Germany, Italy, France, Columbia, Alaska, the Caribbean Islands, most of our National Parks and more. Many Summers were spent in the Adirondacks.
Bill retired from Roadway Express, having previously worked at A&P, S.S. Kresge and Redlins- ki’s.
Carrying on and honoring him are his son Michael and wife Tina, his daughter Cynthia Leigh and husband Kyle Sangiovanni, grandson Christopher William from Michael and Tina, and granddaughter Sofia Leigh from Cynthia and Kyle.
William will be remembered as the life of the party, always ready with a story or a joke, told im- peccably, of course. He was kind to everyone, and adored by all who were lucky enough to know him. A celebration of life for both William and Marjorie will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather.
In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in William’s name to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
