Obituary of Charles J. Manney Jr.

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Charles J. Manney, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 9, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old.

Chuck was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1940. Soon after, his family moved to Buffalo where Chuck grew up. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in 1958, then went on to earn a BS in Electrical Engineering from SUNY Buffalo. There he was a fraternity member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He joined the Army Reserves in 1964, and followed his schooling with a 40 year career as a Systems Engineer at IBM.

As a young boy, Chuck’s father joined the Buffalo Canoe Club in Fort Erie, Ontario. This

environment sparked Chuck’s love of sailing and he joined the BCC at age 16. His passion for sailing and racing along the shore of Lake Erie lasted through a Life Membership at his favorite Club.

Chuck was also a sportsman eager to head to the woods once the summer ended. He was a member of the Ten Guns Sportsman’s Club and Niagara Frontiersmen Pistol & Rifle Club and willingly shared his love of the outdoors with family and friends. He was most content and at ease out in nature whether on water or land.

Throughout his life, Chuck found importance in serving and ministering to others. As a member of the Holy Name Society and a Eucharistic Minister at his parish, he was able to thoughtfully and spiritually give of himself. He found this service of assisting others very rewarding.

In recent years, Chuck spent time training at Parkinson’s Boxing in Kenmore, gaining encouragement and support from his coaches and the community. Chuck was determined and empowered and never gave up his fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Chuck will be remembered most as a family man with an even keeled temperament, kindness toward others, and ability to always find the good in any situation. He treasured his family and friendships and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Chuck is predeceased by his parents Charles J. and Margaret L. Manney and his brother Theodore L. Manney. Chuck is survived by his loving wife Sally M. of 56 years and his sister Ann (Michael) Russell. He is lovingly remembered by his children Charles J. III (Vanessa), Sally (Thomas) Vollbrecht, and Lori (Matthew) Koch, and his grandchildren Clayton (Lauren) and Phillip Koch, Tucker and Sienna Vollbrecht, Jenna and Lauren Manney, and nieces Kate (John Micu) and Beth Russell.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:00 pm on June 4, 2021 at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church 1525 Sheridan Drive.
