Obituary of Richard Brian Goodwald

Richard Goodwald (aka Tony Richards), born in Rochester, PA, was a performer in the entertainment industry.  In addition to staying physically fit from sports such as boxing and football, Richard spent the majority of his life on the road performing both leading and supporting roles for professional musical theatre and opera houses in the United States and Europe.  He sang on tour with members of The Lawrence Welk Orchestra, and developed several solo and duo cabaret acts, which he performed to great acclaim in nightclubs and on cruise ships (Celebrity Cruises).

Richard studied voice with Lee Sweetland, Lorenzo Malfatti, Giorgio Tozzi and Andrew Gainey, worked with many esteemed conductors including Riccardo Muti, and held a degree in vocal performance from Birmingham Southern Conservatory of Music.  Richard played Raoul in the Toronto cast of Phantom of the Opera, and National Tour highlights include Judd in Oklahoma and Pedro in Man of LaMancha.  He was involved with the World Premieres of Song for Cyrano by Wright and Forrest and Weddin’ Day by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin.  Opera experience includes leading and supporting roles with such companies as New York City Opera, Pittsburgh Opera Theatre, Los Angeles Opera, and San Diego Opera.

In addition to private teaching, he served as vocal coach for Town and Gown Theatre (Birmingham, AL) and The Curtain Call Dinner Theatre (Los Angeles), vocal consultant for Tonight at 8:30 (Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre-PICT), vocal coach for Cabaret and Nine (Point Park University), and was an invited lecturer to speak about Beniamino Gigli and vocal technique (PICT's Elderhostel program).

Prior to relocating to Buffalo, NY, Richard was instrumental in the founding and direction of Cabaret Pittsburgh, with wife Stephanie Riso Goodwald, continued to teach and consult privately, and performed in cabaret venues in Pittsburgh and New York City.  Richard was proud of his Italian heritage and loved to cook.

He leaves behind his wife Stephanie of 19 years, dog Peppino, brother Eric Goodwald, sister Christine Mulig and her husband Nick, as well as nephews Bryant (wife Amanda), Dustin, and Christian Mulig, niece Dayna Rae Furr (husband Dean) and great-nieces (Savannah and Hallie) and great-nephews (Liam and Brooks). Richard is preceded in death by parents Clyde and Eolide Goodwald.
